The Pacific Northwest's wet climate adds pressure. Moisture warps wood and causes framing gaps to open wider over time. Copper pipe oxidizes around penetration points, creating gaps where the pipe passes through the sill plate. Roots from mature street trees in Ballard, Wallingford, and Greenwood push against foundations and create new access points every few years.

Norway rats are the dominant species exploiting these gaps in Seattle. A Norway rat requires only a half-inch opening to enter.
